Rengejoin Temple is a popular spot for shukubo stays At Rengejoin Temple, part of the monastic community of Shingon esoteric Buddhism atop Koyasan in Wakayama Prefecture, a fire ceremony is conducted every evening, making it a popular choice for shukubo. No spectacular view. In the night some animal, possibly a frog, jumped against the outside wall for some time trying to get in, making noises. Beware that the baths are only open for a few hours in the evening and closed the rest of the day. That day we were the only guests staying here. All the rooms are Japanese style ( tatami mats with futons, a kotatsu table with heater under it, shoji screens for walls) and a bit cold but they give you tabi socks, a cotton yukata and a warm wool kimono to wear over it while you are there. The staff weren7t overly friendly but we didn't care and enjoyed our stay here. They supplied wool kimono jackets along with the main robe, which also was quite cozy. The hallways were quite cold and night, but our room was toasty due to an in-room heater.
Hotel It's relatively close to town and other sights in Koyasan. Bezit of beheert u deze gelegenheid? Room was as also in other Koyasan temples spartan and without any luxury.

I would highly recommend it to anyone visiting Japan, even if it is off the beaten track and away from the bright lights of the cities. This monastery inn is excellent. Our itinerary was: Taking the train at 13:00 in Osaka, arriving at the temple by 15-16:00, attending meditation, dinner, attending the cementary nightwalk, go to bed after bathing. We paid a small fortune for the most basic conditions. What grated most was the inhospitability and indifference of the monks; this is clearly a business and the guests are treated as a burden to bare without a smile. This is a rip-off thinly disguised as a religious experience.Four stars for the experience of staying in a temple, meditating and chanting with the monks, and eating delicious vegetarian food. There is a 'wifi room' with free wifi (and also a...When we stayed here we were welcomed very friendly. For a temple that also doubles as an inn, I think it struck a good balance between pure religious authenticity and hospitality.
It's much colder in Koya than the rest of Wakayama so we enjoyed the temple baths. Koyasan itself is a lovely area well worth a day of exploring. The temple has beautiful architecture and traditional Japanese garden. The dinner was divine, and the breakfast was quite delicious too -- I ate every bite of both meals. This temple seems authentic to me.
